Why I Chose Autism Speaks as a Charitable Giving Experience
Autism is not a term that many of us are unfamiliar with. However, it is also not a subject we are well versed in. I became familiar with Autism Speaks through the television show The Apprentice a couple of years ago. Holly Robinson Peete was competing and I learned that her son is living with Autism.
She created a non-profit organization to help families that need financial assistance with children that have autism. She herself stated that even though she and her husband are celebrities, dealing with the financial commitments of therapy related to Autism, was still stressful.
Realizing this, they began a foundation called the HollyRod Foundation to help other families deal with these stresses. I thought this was an awesome endeavor and have since become more aware.
Even still we are unaware as to how many families are affected by Autism. To put it into perspective, more children will be diagnosed with some degree of autism each year than with juvenile diabetes, AIDS or cancer combined.
I love children so much and any foundation that speaks for them has my heart!
